Browndale Real Estate & Homes
St. Louis Park’s Browndale neighborhood has come a long way from the days when the Brown family farmed the land. Mr. Brown was a wealthy lumber and mill man who, in the mid-1800s, bought the Midwood, Chambers and Craik farms to create the Browndale farm and commenced raising cattle and Clydesdale horses. After Brown’s death, the land sat vacant for some time until purchased by a developer and platted in June of 1915.
Today, Browndale is a neighborhood filled with about 1,400 active people. It lies south of Excelsior Blvd. and north of the City of Edina, between Wooddale Avenue and the City of Edina on the east and Highway 100 on the west.
When you buy a house in Browndale you’ll find your new neighbors to be quite active in keeping residents connected to one another. They do so primarily through the neighborhood’s online newsletter and its Facebook page.
The neighborhood’s residents hold many events during the year, such as pumpkin carving at Browndale Park, Health in the Park and the Bonfire and Bluegrass event where folks can build scarecrows, listen to live music and have dinner for only $3.
Although Browndale is mainly a residential area, you will find some businesses along Excelsior Blvd and Wooddale. In fact, the Miracle Mile Shopping Center lies on the neighborhood’s northeast border. Here you’ll find most of the conveniences you’ll need, including a hardware store, animal hospital, shoe store, dry cleaner and a book store.
Across Excelsior Blvd. you’ll find another shopping center that includes a movie theatre, some chain restaurants and more.
Browndale Park, located in the southern part of the neighborhood, is home to many of the area’s activities. In the summer, residents swim, play basketball, baseball and softball. The park features horseshoe pits, pickleball courts, grills for barbecuing, sand volleyball, soccer fields and tennis courts.
In winter, residents enjoy the hockey rink, figure skating rink and sledding hill. The park also features a warming house.
